Plumbing Tips for Homeowners

Most home repair is usually not welcomed by homeowners. After all, it means more money out of their own pockets. When it comes to plumbing, here are some helpful tips from that homeowners can use to save money through the course of every season.

Toilet Clogs

Many times, toilet paper is actually the cause of a clogged toilet. This comes as no surprise being as though many brands are very durable. Other times, clogs are a result of things that were not meant to be flushed. Avoid using your toilet to dispose of any items that are intended to go in there and keep toilet paper to a minimum during each flush.

One way to make your dishwasher more energy efficient is to let hot water run for a short while before starting your dishwasher. This will allow the wash cycle to start right away with hot water. Stay away from the heated dry setting and the delay cycle as both will use excess energy that is not necessary. Just make sure to use a dish towel instead of paper towels for drying to be green and retain those savings. Also, make sure to run the dishwasher only when it is fully loaded.

Hot Water Heater Checks

The life of a hot water heater is always threatened by contaminants as it is unavoidable. Sediment builds up over the course of time and eventually hot water heater repair is inevitable. But you can keep an eye out for rust as a quick accumulation of that means it’s probably time for replacement.

If you are a pet owner, there are some helpful plumbing hints you can follow. Always keep toilet lids closed and do not flush kitty litter down the toilet if you own a cat. Dog owners should be aware of any holes dug in their yards and make sure they do not interfere with the sewer line. Some sewer lines are just a foot and a half beneath the ground and a rupture there could mean major problems.

Keep Clean Gutters

Some people may not think of gutters when it comes to plumbing, but clogged gutters prevent the flow of water off your home. In the winter months, water could freeze in your gutters and that can lead to a variety of problems that could include your plumbing.

Ways to Prevent Toilet Clogs and Maintain Your Toilet

Maintaining a household toilet is not something that everyone does with expert precision. There are certain ways to keep toilets free from clogs and in efficient working condition. These tips can help save you money in the long run by avoiding the need to a hire a Charlotte plumber for small issues.

Just because you flush something down the toilet does not mean it is gone forever. Not everything flushes easily as paper products could eventually clog a toilet. There are several other items which could bring about similar problems, such as Q-tips, napkins, and feminine hygiene products. These items will not cause an immediate problem, but could back up over time. Keep in mind that your toilet should not double as a trash basket.

Toilets are built to be very solid. However, it is not a good idea to stand on them at all. The added weight could cause your toilet bowl to crack, causing a huge problem. Another practice that could crack your toilet bowl is pouring in any kind of hot liquid. Toilets run on cold water and a change in temperature could be drastic enough to do damage.

It is also customary to clean your toilet frequently, but the wrong type of cleaning utensils could cause a fair amount of damage. Toilet brushes with plastic bristles are the best option because they will not scrape the inside of the toilet the way brushes with metal bristles will.

The right equipment is also important to use when attempting to unclog a toilet. The most accepted tool is a plunger, although it is not always effective. When a plunger will not get the job done, go with a toilet auger, which is a specially designed tool to bend along with the pipes’ unique trajectory. Attempting to use a homemade ‘snake’ made out of something like a wire coat hanger could significantly damage your toilet.

Routine operational checks should also be done every so often. Test the shut off valve and make sure that it stops water from running into the toilet. In the event that there is a plumbing emergency, you want to know that you can shut off the water with just a quick turn of the wrist.

How to Detect a Water Leak in Your Home

Leaking water could lead to an expensive fix inside your home. Before the problem gets too costly, there are several ways to identify a leak without a plumbing contractor on hand. If you suspect that there is a leak in your home, here are some areas you can check.

Water Meter
If you suspect there is a leak somewhere in your home, there’s a way to confirm your suspicions. First, turn off the water inside your home. Next, locate the water meter and examine its small dial. If that dial is moving, it means there is still water running and there is indeed a leak.

Hot Water Heater
Checking the hot water heater will let you know if there is a hot water leak in your home. The way to check this is to turn the valve on the hot water heater to the off position. Let it remain off for around a minute and then turn it back to the on position. Listen for a surge when it is turned back on. If there is a surge that signifies that you are in need of water heater repair. If not, it still does not rule out a cold water leak.

One easy way to check for a leaky toilet is to place some food coloring in the top part. Do not use the toilet for an extended period of time, and then check the bowl a few hours later. If that coloring is showing in the bowl, the toilet leaked through and there is indeed a cold water leak.

It is not uncommon for the bathtub to be a source of a leak and a common sign is disturbed tiles or vinyl on the bathroom floor next to the tub. Also, look for any moldy areas on the floor, or cracks in the caulking around the tub. Another sign is spots on the ceiling in the room underneath where the bathtub is located.

There is a possibility that the leak is not directly under your home. On a dry day, go out beyond the water meter and look at the ground for signs of a rainy day. Soft spots and muddy areas indicate that water is leaking below the ground. Underground leaks can also come with a type of hissing sound that can sometimes be heard from the lowest point of the house.

If you detect a water leak in your home, contact the team of professionals at Ammons Superior Plumbing Service Charlotte NC. Our team of technicians can provide an immediate fix to clogged toilets, water heater repair and any kind of drain clog, in addition to all other plumbing problems.

How to Identify a Main Line Clog in Your Home

Drain cleaning is a lot more complex than just pulling some hair out of a clogged shower drain or unclogging last night’s leftovers from underneath the kitchen sink. Sometimes, drain cleaning involves problems with the main sewer drain.

toilet clog
A clog in the main line needs to be identified right away, but it can be done by homeowners. The way to check this is to first identify the home’s lowest fixture, which could be a floor drain. It could also be a toilet or even a shower. Once that fixture is located, look for any problems. If there is nothing discernible, test it by flushing a toilet on the floor above. If water begins to seep from the lowest fixture when the toilet flushes, it is an indication that there is a clog in your main sewer.

So Why Exactly Does That Happen?

Clogs could come from flushing things down the toilet that were not meant to go down there. Items like paper towels are not intended to be flushed, among other things. This may also be no fault of the homeowner and simply an act of nature. Outside tree roots sometimes extend downward and infiltrate the main line, causing a clog as seen in the photo below.

The problem could also be caused by a bad house trap, which isolates the plumbing in a home from the main sewer. It also keeps pests out and safeguards the plumbing from gas.

When a problem with the main line is diagnosed, it is important that it be taken care of right away. A failure to do so could be costly as the problem goes well beyond just an annoying drip. A clog in the main line could lead to a backup of sewage to the point where it starts coming up out of the drains in a home.

This could lead to severe damage to the house or call for a complete sewer replacement which can be a costly expense. As soon as you detect a problem with the main line, the first and immediate move should be to contact a professional plumbing contractor.
